Sea Otter is at home, enjoying an evening meal of a mollusk garnered from the deep. Vulnerable while using his chest as a table, he finds protection in the obscuring shadow of the weather-beaten vessel Salty Isle, while the ocean's ripples in formline further disguise his silhouette
Once abundant along the Pacific Northwest Coast otters were hunted to near extinction by the mid 1800’s for their uniquely exquisite fur. A lifetime spent swimming in the ocean’s cool water results in a fine and dense protective fur, impregnable to water, and thus cold. As the seasons did not change the Otters’ unusually soft and velvety fur, these trusting creatures were relentlessly hunted for the incredible riches their furs would bring the Sea Captains.
Otter came into the world with a long, spear shaped tail through an encounter between the mischievous Raven and a man attempting to pre-empt Raven’s propensity for transforming humans into animals. Preparing to slay the trickster with a sharp spear, man was transformed, spear and all, into Otter.
