Sgaana, in the Haida language, represents both Killer Whale and Power. The power of Killer Whale is dual: the head is masculine, fierce, seemingly omnipotent, but this supernatural beings supreme strength is balanced by the feminine Jaad depicted in its tail. Thus, strength is balanced through fluid grace. The Sun in this depiction is a visual homonym, being both life-giving rays of light and life-supporting ribs. When Raven steals the light and inadvertently shares it with the world, the Village of the Whales lying under the sea is also affected. The sun's rays become a part of the Whale's domain either by reflection, or by penetration of the surface to their undersea world.
