Yaahl (alias Raven), the trickster cousin in the Corvidae Clan, is motivated by insatiable desires to legendary antics, and the most important of all creatures on the Northwest Coast. As a clan symbol it identifies half the Haida society, and as a crest, claim is by all. Full of magical powers, this supernatural being, with its sleek black lines, thick straight beak and prominent 'ears', is the transformer-creator principally responsible for changing the world to its present form. An opportunistic forager, he now feasts on both crab and a salmon head which he shares with his fledgling young. In the shelter of parental wing feathers, these new lives open their bright pink mouths with expectation.
