Wealth in Song
Music and song have always woven through Haida daily life:
weft of lullaby and on through mourning, warp of potlatch and on through
warfare, weaving the vessel to carry the culture and the history of a
people. Without a written language, the art of the oral tradition is a
living and evolving entity preserving the cultural wealth of the people
through songs and poetry. The songs are owned and passed down within a
lineage: permission to sing another's song can only be granted by the owner.
A Haida elder in song defines the wealth of a nation.
