In The Beginning
In the beginning... Raven (Ne-Kil-stlas) wore a cloak of white feathers. This Raven, who alone of his kind survived the Great Flood, was not an ordinary bird: he brought the First People and the Light into this world. Raven carried the sun, the moon, and the stars to the outside world through the smokehole of a great Chief's longhouse. This route of escape has great mythical significance, as it is held to be the reason his feathers became black. In the beginning... fireweed covers the land, heralding the regeneration of the forest. In the beginning... a juvenile Raven, as represented in its primal form by this young Raven dancer, carries the future of a people, the Haida. |
