Only the greatest of Haida chiefs had Three Watchmen with high hats carved at the top of their longhouse frontal poles. They sit high above the roof tops in constant vigil, with one looking straight ahead to the horizon and the other two scanning the shoreline as it stretches out from their community. These three human figures represented actual watchmen who were stationed at strategic lookouts to alert the village of approaching family, friend or foe.
